KIDS DANCE VIDEOS – Fun workouts for kids | Jump with Jill launches second FREE danceable music video “Nature’s Candy”

In celebration of March as National Nutrition Month and the beginning of the watermelon growing season, the country’s only rock ‘n roll nutrition show Jump with Jill will offer kid’s dance videos with a video submission contest. So say hello to video number two in our new classroom calisthenics video series featuring the hit song from the Jump with Jill show, Nature’s Candy. Pompadour hairdo, handkerchief, cape and all, the Rockstar Nutritionist channels her inner James Brown (or shall we say Janelle Monae?) to showcase the electrifying power of choosing fruit over candy. Joined by her band on piano, sax, upright bass, drums, and guitar and her featured dancers to model the moves, the song is presented in three levels to allow kids to master the moves.

WATERMELON DAY VIDEO OFFERS JUICY WAYS TO BRING NUTRITION EDUCATION INTO CLASSROOM Pittsburgh School Becomes Movie Set for Fruit-Filled Day

Pittsburgh, July 22, 2011– As the school year comes to a close, South Butler Primary School hosted Watermelon Day with the country’s only Rockstar Nutritionist. Culminating students’ yearlong math, reading and science lessons with the Rockstar Nutritionist’s trademark music and movement-based learning, the Knoch school became a movie set for a free online video. Parents and educators can use this tool for ideas on how to incorporate nutrition education into existing curriculum to establish healthy habits in students.

“With all the competition from unhealthy food advertising, we are constantly running a PR campaign for healthy food. One of the ways you can get kids excited about healthy food is to involve them in your campaign. That way, eating healthy food doesn’t seem like punishment,” says the Pittsburgh-based Rockstar Nutritionist Jill Jayne, a registered dietitian and musician.

Jayne worked with first grade teacher Melinda Gourley to develop the day’s activities, including serving up fresh cut watermelon for the kids to try. While Mrs. Gourley reviewed adjectives to describe the senses, Jayne reviewed the importance of eating fruit with a song called “Nature’s Candy.” Their collaboration created a positive opportunity for kids to be successful with healthy food. Katrina Hovanec declared, “I tried watermelon before and I didn’t like it, and now I tried it today and I really like it.”

How to Host Watermelon Day at Your School

It’s WATERMELON DAY here at South Butler Primary School! Join the Rockstar Nutritionist and Mrs. Gourley’s first grade class to show you how it’s done.

With all the competition from unhealthy food advertising, we are constantly running a PR campaign for healthy food. And one of the ways you can get kids excited about healthy food is to involve them in your campaign. That way, eating healthy food doesn’t seem like punishment.

Use every opportunity to teach healthy habits. Instead of counting pizzas, we are counting watermelons!

Make healthy the norm, rather than the exception. When healthy becomes the accepted choice, everyone wants to do it. Incorporate what kids already know from other subjects into nutrition education to make healthy habits relevant.

Create opportunities for kids to be successful with healthy food. Let them pick it out, cut it, and eat it with you. Ask them to use all their senses like how it tastes, looks, and smells. It takes up to 10 tries for a child to accept a new food, so keep singing healthy food’s praises!

Friday in Florida

In May, the Eat More Watermelon! Jump with Jill Tour landed for a week in Orlando, Florida. The shows rolled out a USDA Team Nutrition grant for the Orange County Public Schools, managed by Teresa Douglas Shipley. In this video, The Rockstar Nutritionist joins brother-rocker Mark Jayne and sound engineer Trevor Gast to the most annoying tune about a day of the week ever sung, though similar in content to the Black Eyed Peas 2008 weekday naming hit “Tonight’s Gonna Be a Goodnight,” the former written by a 13-year old and the latter by a grammy winner. When I was 13, I played terribly on the basketball team, folded up notes to my friends, and decorated my bookcovers with magazine ads. I’m so glad the world heard my music long after I finished middle school!

The Rockstar Nutritionist on KDKA Pittsburgh

Jill and Mark Jayne appear with watermelon in tow on Pittsburgh’s KDKA, the world’s first modern radio station.  That fun fact was courtesy of Jill and Mark’s dad. The brother-sister duo are Pittsburgh natives who expressed their  teenage angst performing in rock bands and now use their music backgrounds, and their respective degrees, to teach kids about nutrition. Jill holds her BS in Nutrition from Penn State, her MS in Nutrition Education from Columbia University, and is a registered dietitian. Mark holds his BA in public relations from Penn State, and is currently pursuing his MS in Education at Duquense University.
In this segment, the Jayne’s discuss how they organized a Watermelon Day in South Butler Primary School in Knoch School District. Instead of just removing unhealthy food celebrations like Pizza Parties and Donut Days, Jill & Mark help craft messages and experiences around healthy living so healthy food doesn’t seem like punishment.
